to all Hiattheads
The Open Road - John's new masterpiece
--> streedate in Europe on March 5, 2010
John recorded this new record with The Ageless Beauties... Doug Lancio on guitar, Patrick O'Hearn on bass and Kenny Blevins on drums. I heard recently that there will be a full band U.S. tour starting late April.
I can't wait - seems to be a great recording (I have heard)
(no responsibility is taken for the correctness of this information)
rave on

Thanks for the update. I didn't know about the upcoming release.
I admit I didn't like Same Old Man (sorry-I liked Master of Disaster more than SOM but a lot less than my other Hiatt albums). I'm hoping to love the next one (I want to love them all...) as much as I love these:
Slow Turning
Perfectly Good Guitar
Walk On
Crossing Muddy Waters
The Tiki Bar is Open (when my bathroom is painted it will be decorated w/Tiki Bar theme-not because I drink which I don't-because of HIatt/the album)
& probably my favorite:
Beneath This Gruff Exterior
Amazing...so many masterpieces by the same guy! |

Crap. I just found out if you pre-ordered at Newbury, you got a free autographed CD booklet. I pre-ordered through Amazon so no autographed booklet. Oh well.
Got the email that it was shipped, though! Wahey! (jump! jump!) |

Hey ! Just got my copy of The Open Road and have this thang' in drive ! Groovin' blues; thinking I'll keep it full of gas & well oiled for a long stretch. Thanks again, John. & even though I ordered from Amazon...I just might buy another (copy) for my sister (also a huge Hiatt fan). Now, where was it we can get an autographed something or other ? Guess I'll read above & find out about the aforementioned site for that ! Roll on Mr. Hiatt...and to quote you, I wish you "All The Best." |

| Oh, so I see...the key words being 'pre-order'; That's alright--I'm too busy enjoying this new 'OPEN ROAD'. Have fun, all. |

Yes, especially the second half of the disc, some great songs like "Carry you back home", "Wonder of love", Fireball Roberts" and my absolute favourite "What kind of man" (would fit perfectly on the Goners-disc 'Beneath this Gruff Exterior' IMO). _________________ ... there's a bitter sweet perfume... |

Just had my first full listen, and damn, this is one fine album. I feel as if John really reached inside for this one -- as if he's putting his whole life on the lab table for inspection.
I agree that the second half of the album is where it really gets into gear, where the band kicks in and his singing fits into its idiosyncratic groove. The three-track run of "My Baby," "Homeland," and "Wonder of Love" in particular simply soars. I'm laughing out loud at how much fun he's having.
I enjoyed Same Old Man and Master of Disaster, but I do feel as if this one catches fire in a way he hasn't done since Tiki Bar or Gruff Exterior. Makes me proud to be a Hiatt fan! _________________ www.thesonginmyheadtoday.blogspot.com

I love the way he sings: "mah babeh, mah babeh, mah bebeh, mah bebeh"!

Nice review! I agree with you on the last paragraph (Same Old/Master vs Tiki/Gruff). Don't like this one as much as Tiki/Gruff but much better than Same Old.
On the recent albums there's sometimes too much going on in the lyrics for me-when he sings/speaks very quickly. I don't know how to describe that except it made me think of the term "recitative" from opera. Not easy to sing along with...I never liked that phrase but it kind of fits what I'm trying to say. I'm not saying music should always be easy to sing along with (Joni Mitchell melodies would be a bitch to sing but I love them). Maybe not easy to process/remember is the thing. Clearly I get confused even trying to describe it, so maybe the decline in MY mental faculties (as I get older) is the reason I find some of the songs less accessible! I used to perform Stravinsky and these days I get pissed off because I can't even figure out the time signatures of Led Zeppelin! _________________ Do it for love-
